Hair loss How to identify if it is normal or alopecia?

Bojanini Experts

Hair loss in men and women is a common condition, but it can be difficult to distinguish whether it is normal hair loss or if it is due to some pathology such as androgenetic alopecia. In this article, we will present some signs that can help you know if your hair loss is normal or if you should seek care from specialist doctors.

What is normal hair loss?

Daily hair loss is completely natural, and it is estimated that losing between 120 and 150 hairs a day is part of the normal hair growth cycle. This process is made up of three main phases:

  1. Anagen Phase: This is the phase of active hair growth and can last for several years. At this stage, the hair is nourished and strengthened from the root.
  2. Catagen phase: It is a transitory phase that lasts a few weeks, in which growth stops, and the follicle begins to retract.
  3. Telogen phase: During this phase, the hair no longer grows and finally sheds to make way for a new hair cycle.

The fall in the telogen phase allows the natural regeneration of the hair and ensures continuous renewal. This cycle is an essential part of hair health and is not a cause for concern. However, if you notice a fall that seems excessive or persistent, it may be beneficial to consult with a specialist to ensure that everything is in balance.

What is alopecia?

Alopecia is a disease that causes hair loss in very noticeable ways. This condition can present with various symptoms and for various causes such as genetic or hereditary factors, immunological diseases, vitamin deficiency secondary to surgical processes or strict diets, severe stress, taking some medications, severe acute infections, etc.

Take a break

Take note of these signs and carefully observe the behavior of your hair to know if your hair loss is normal or it is time to schedule an appointment specialized in alopecia:

The amount of hair you lose: As we already told you, it is natural to lose around 120 / 150 hairs a day, which can be imperceptible in most cases. If you notice more hair than usual on your brush, in the shower, or on your pillow, it may be a sign of alopecia.

The duration of hair loss: Normal hair loss can last between 3-4 months. However, alopecia is characterized by being a more persistent hair loss. If you notice that your hair continues to fall out for extended periods of time for several months, something is not right! It’s time to attend with your trusted Hair Expert.

Hair loss patterns: Alopecia presents with specific patterns, such as Frontal Alopecia, which usually affects the headband area or “receding hairlines”. Another case is that of Alopecia Areata, which begins with the appearance of bald patches, in advanced cases it spreads throughout the scalp, face and body.

Family history: Alopecia can be triggered by inherited genetic factors. An example of this is androgenetic or androgenic alopecia. This condition affects both men and women. It occurs when hair follicles on the scalp become sensitive to the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This causes them to shrink and produce thinner and shorter hairs.

Other symptoms to know if your hair loss is Alopecia:

Itching, pain, redness on the scalp, obvious spaces on the head where more skin of the scalp is visible and it is time to comb your hair looking to hide the hair loss or when you tie up a bun you turn the rubber more feeling less volume… These are signs that you need to visit your trusted specialist doctor.
